Planning to come to a yoga class for the first time? Here are some suggestions.
If you have had any health issues or have a structural weakness in your body, it's best to have a chat with your doctor before you start.
Leave at least two hours between a full meal and the start of your yoga session.
Arrive a little earlier for the first yoga class so you can let the teacher know about your reasons for starting yoga and any physical limitations you may have.
Wear loose or stretchy gym or yoga clothes to allow freedom of movement. Teeshirt and jogging pants are fine. Leave any jewellery apart from rings at home.
Bring a blanket and a yoga mat if you have them, but usually there are spare ones available.
Take the class as it comes. Allow yourself to be in the present moment as the practice unfolds.
Honour the limitations of your own body. The teacher gives suggestions, but always be prepared override them according to your own body's needs.
Yoga can be an extremely pleasurable as you start to liberate your energy. Advancement depends on your willingness and ability to stay present and aware of your body and the breath.
During the class, take a break whenever you need. There is no such thing as competition in yoga, not even with yourself. A good practice is when you feel the healing effects of the poses, gradually making your body stronger and more flexible and learning to be at ease with your mind.
